Ludington Pier 4/8

A wonderful night to be out on Lake Michigan.

Manistee River Conditions

Well I wanted to post a little bit of data to show WHY Fishing on the Manistee River has been slow lately.
As you see in the graph below the Water Temp since about March 26th has been Below Normal considering the 13 year average shown by the Triangles.

At the present moment the Big Man is reporting about 4.5 C which is 40 F Degrees and the fishing action will start to heat up.

The Gage Height and Flow are high but in a couple days - fishing should be Excellent!

Good Luck and Tight Lines....

Fishing by the Country Club on the Rogue River.

I got a chance to see a number of cool spots on the river today thanks to my good friend Steve.  I am very excited to learn of more new spots to fish closer to home these days.

I grew up fishing the Northern and Upper Michigan, but after moving to the Lansing area many of my day-trip spots are out of reach.

I encourage other people to share locations that will encourage others to get out and enjoy the beautiful state we live in.  You can email us your links ( hothuntingspots@gmail.com ) and we will post them.  If you do not want to add specific locations, consider some general hints if you wish.

For the select few people who are willing to share fishing reports...  ( BUT ask we do not post the detailed locations - WE HONOR THAT! )

Here are a few other photos of this spot on the river.

Thanks Steve!

A Special Thank You to my Friend Steve!
Thank you for taking me fishing today and showing me some new spots.

Quote of the Day - " Fishing was GREAT - Catching was not so good "

Rogue River Fishing Spots - GPS Links

One of the primary goals that started the whole "Hot Hunting Spots" Team and web site 5 years ago was the idea of helping others find public spots to Hunt & Fish!  I grew up hunting and fishing almost every chance I could in my hometown where I knew all the spots to go.

Our Goal is to help EVERYONE participate in hunting and fishing activities ( making the entire outdoor industry stronger ) which helps all of us protect our favorite sport, public land access and help pass on our knowledge to a new generation.

Many people who hunt and fish are not very willing to share their information, in fear that their favorite spot will be overrun....

We understand that thinking and we apologize in advance if by chance we post your favorite spot or hunting area.

Consider for a moment the following common scenarios:

1.  The new adult or child wanting to start fishing, but has no idea where to go?
2.  A dedicated fisherman who moved to a new city or state....
3.  The person who is looking for a new spot...
4.  Parents who want to get their children into fishing - but not sure how?

There are many other reasons to help each other out.  I for one want to see a new generation of youth recognize the importance of nature and our responsibility to care for it as well as enjoy it.

Here are some spots on the Rogue River if you are just getting started or looking for a new spot.

Rogue River 4/7 - Honk Hole

I had a good friend of mine show me some spots on the Rogue River today.  This spot is called the "Honk Hole" nick named because of the old one lane bridge on the other side of the river that people needed to honk before crossing.

It was a very beautiful morning with little to no wind and plenty of birds and squirrels to keep us company on the river while we worked the gravel areas.

No fish on the hook - at this spot, but we saw one jump and so we are moving on to another spot.

Rogue River 4/6

The action on the Rogue River is heating up a bit.  The rain has brought out all the fishermen who are waiting anxiously for the water temperature to warm up and get the fish up river.

Here is a photo of the conditions as of 4/6/2011.

I am planning to do a early morning fishing trip in the next two days to get "BOOTS IN THE WATER" and have a more detailed report then.

Black Stone Flies

According to a very Good Friend of Mine...

Bear Creek - Thunder Snow

Well as fishing day's go.... This was not the best weather!  At one point it was snowing so hard with HUGE flakes that you couldn't really tell where your cast went.  You pretty much knew, because you are use to where it should be, however you could not get a visual.

The snow flakes were very large and it was difficult to focus clearly with the water flowing sideways, snow coming down and trying to keep track of your line heading toward snags and other fish friendly objects that keep you practicing how to tie knots with cold fingers.

At the high point of the storm - it was snowing with Thunder and Lightning which caused us to take a short break from fishing.

Overall - EVERY Day fishing is better than one at work!  ( not sure how that saying would go if you were a professional fisherman? )

Tight Lines

Light Bite ...

The fish at present time appear to be interested in a very small bait - wax worm, fly or small spawn bag.  The water is pretty clear and that may be impacting the visual presentation.  Also those doing the best are using very light leader line due to water clarity.

I personally use a 8lb main line, very small black barrel swivel and 4lb leader.  This requires a light drag setting on the reel to allow for quick runs and the rest is done by my 10 1/2 ft rod.

Good Luck!

Bear Creek - April 3rd

The weather on Sunday April 3rd  ( 34 degrees & light snow ) to start off the morning.  We observed a few fish on gravel and so the morning looked very promising.  There were 6 other people fishing on the river that we seen while walking around figuring out what holes we wanted to fish.

The one group fishing just north of us had a nice fresh 8 - 10 pound fish on the stringer and they lost what appeared to be a slightly larger fish that tangled in some wood and finally broke off.
